Work in Progress Blog Challenge – Going Home

Recently, I was tagged by fellow writer Zee Southcombe in a Work in Progress blog challenge. It’s a very simple one: you post the first line from the first three chapters in your current work in progress and then tag four people to do the same. So without further ado, here are the first lines of the first chapter of Going Home, the novella I’m currently editing.

Chapter 1: A wooden door creaked as it opened and then closed with a bang, waking Orryn.

Chapter 2: “Unbelievable!” Exclaimed the gray haired gentleman with the over-sized sideburns who was standing next to Orryn by the baggage carousel, talking to no-one in particular.

Chapter 3: A black pick-up truck pulled up in front of the bench outside the train station, where Orryn was sitting.

So there you have it! I know people say you shouldn’t start a story with your MC waking up, but I’m choosing to pretend that it doesn’t count as a cliche if they wake up on a trans-Atlantic flight of a lifetime…
It’s funny, looking at my first lines like this I realize they’re… sort of nondescript. I have it on good authority (I’m looking at you, Grace) that I do good last lines but perhaps I need to go over all my opening lines once more when I’m done with the rest of the editing. Still, I hope they have sparked some interest in you, and if they haven’t hopefully the excerpts I’ll be posting in the next few weeks will.

Before I get too ranty, it’s time to pass on the challenge. I am tagging the following people:

– J.C. Hart
Bisky Scribbles
Paola Crespo
– You! That’s right, if you’re reading this, and you’re a writer who blogs, you’re tagged!

  3. I love that you’ve left it open for writers to take on the challenge 🙂

Also, great name choice in Orryn. Chapter one is a fantastic start!

    • Glad you think it’s a good start!
I’m so happy to hear you like the name Orryn. I’ve occasionally wondered if it’s too unusual (especially since the few sites that list it as a name list it as a male name) but it’s just been her name for so long I can’t think of her with another one!
