First visual artist boost of the year, yay!
Reimena Ashel Yee
Reimena Ashel Yee is an illustrator and comics artist who I discovered through a random retweet by someone on Twitter earlier this year. I believe she is Malaysian with some ties to Australia, but if I am wrong on that I will happily correct this post (her website bio didn’t mention it that I could see). She is also an amazing artist with a really unique style that I love.
If I remember correctly, it was one of her Pet Portraits that got me to follow her on Twitter and check out her website. I am not sure what Reimena’s policy is on others posting her art, so I won’t share any images in this post but believe me – they are about the cutest thing you’ve ever seen! The personality of the pet really shines in these gorgeous drawings, and her style is really unique. To me, they’re the perfect blend of cartoonishness and realism! In fact, I am probably ordering from her this year, provided her commissions aren’t already full (I should’ve ordered weeks ago but I have deadline brain so…). You can see some of her portraits (pets and people) here on her website, and all of her pet portraits her in her Facebook album. Go look!
Did you look? I told you they were adorable!
Reimena also writes and draws a comic called The World in Deeper Inspection, which is a historical comic about detectives and vampires and things. I haven’t read it yet, I’ll admit, but it’s on my “after my last Uni deadline” list and I suspect I will enjoy it a lot, given the art style and the themes and setting. You should check that out, too!
You can follow Reimena on Facebook and on Twitter @reimenayee, which I recommend doing based on the many delicious-looking photos of desserts she posts alone. And if you have a furry little friend you want immortalized, consider getting one of her super cute pet portraits! But not, y’know, until I buy some… Get in line!
